Small Garden - Design 1 To create the illusion of space one design principle is to use circles, making an area look bigger than it really is. It also provides a 'change of direction' drawing the eye around the garden, creating an impression of space in a confined area by highlighting the garden's range of focal points. Planting is really important in any garden but particular use of scented leaves and flowers, herbs and structural plants, turns a small garden into an exciting outdoor room.
